The vision of Albert Gallatin to establish “in this immense and fast-growing city...a system of
rational and practical education fitting for all and graciously open to all” lives in the
animating principles of NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS): an overarching
academic focus on “practical” or professional and career-focused study, responsiveness to changing
educational needs arising within the regional economy, and a commitment to broad access.
As SCPS approaches its own 75th anniversary, the School boasts a singular yet highly diverse
profile. Widely known for one of the most respected post-baccalaureate continuing education
programs in the United States, SCPS has transformed itself as well into NYU’s fourth largest
graduate school and fifth largest undergraduate college. Its curricula reflect the highest
standards of the University and New York’s own driving energy, applied and specialized knowledge,
and creativity.
Approximately 4,500 full-time and part-time matriculated students pursue 14 distinct master’s
and 26 undergraduate degrees. For adult learners studying for career advancement or intellectual
discovery, nearly 4,000 courses, lecture series, and conferences are held in subjects ranging from
applied income real estate property valuation to Arabic, from hospitality industry investment to
digital filmmaking, from credit analysis to arts appraisal, to programs that address global human
trafficking or explore the American dream through literature and cinema or New York’s urban
landscape. Classes are held in Washington Square, downtown, midtown, days and evenings, and
online.
