NYU-SCPS Convocation Speakers Offer Advice to Graduates

Mayor Cory A. Booker of Newark, NJ, and Janet Robinson, president and chief executive officer of The New York Times Company, were the featured speakers at the 2009 NYU-SCPS Convocation ceremonies in May.

During the morning ceremony for graduates of NYU-SCPS master’s and graduate certificate programs, Booker told his audience that to be successful means being “who you are” in every aspect of their lives. A lawyer and city councilman before he became mayor of New Jersey’s largest city in 2006, Booker said, “If you [let yourself] resonate with all your energy and all your ideals, you have no idea the impact you will make on the world.”

Later in the day, Janet Robinson spoke to students graduating from the Paul McGhee Division who had earned their bachelor’s or associate’s degrees. In her address, the longtime publishing executive, who is a former public school teacher, recalled changing her own career path. “I’ve learned that there is never a perfect time to venture into the unknown, no matter how much experience you have,” said Robinson. “Taking a risk is always a little unnerving, but above all, taking a risk is often the only way to move forward and the best way to secure your future, and most of all, your happiness.”
