A Message From Dean Lapiner

NYU-SCPS was founded 75 years ago this fall. Our School has evolved dramatically since 1934, but has remained faithful to our core values: educational excellence, innovation, access, and public service. Year in and year out, NYU-SCPS captures the real-world expertise concentrated in many of the most vital fields where New York is the creative seat of global practice, where new knowledge and ways of thinking and of doing business regularly emerge—and are incorporated in what is learned in our classrooms.

There is no School like ours. Alone among the world’s great research universities, NYU entrusted the School of Continuing and Professional Studies to assemble its own dedicated full-time and adjunct faculty, and authorized us to create unique professional and liberal arts curricula as well as practical and immediately useful approaches to more theoretically oriented fields. Whether for professionally oriented undergraduates or working executives earning master’s degrees, or the intellectually curious taking courses to broaden their career skills or general understanding, NYU-SCPS is at the heart of vital learning communities, serving the intellectual and career interests of adult learners throughout their active lives. No wonder our alumni networks literally span the planet.

The articles in this newsletter corroborate these claims. You can meet accomplished new leaders joining our School and learn about the towering contributions of those who have helped guide our development. Our reputation and the global relevance of our programs are documented in the profiles of the Fulbright Scholars who are among our graduate students. The applied research and public outreach initiatives of our faculty—like the new Resource Guides we produced twice this calendar year to help New Yorkers rebuild our economy and their careers—reveal other broad and purposeful facets of our School.

We invite you to experience the vitality of NYU-SCPS firsthand throughout this anniversary year at special events bringing together our remarkable faculty and affiliated experts, as they share insights and illuminate the issues transforming professional fields and impacting society and civic life. (Visit scps.nyu.edu to find out about them.) At these programs and in all our classrooms, you will discern the outlines of the academic directions where NYU-SCPS will be charting new paths during our next 75 years.
