2009 NYU Hospitality Industry Investment Conference Celebrates Loews Hotels CEO Jonathan M. Tisch's 15th Anniversary as Conference Chair

NEW YORK, May 11, 2009 - This year, at the 31st Annual NYU Hospitality Industry Investment Conference, the NYU Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management will mark the 15th anniversary of conference chair Jonathan M. Tisch, chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels, and co-chairman of the board and office of the president, Loews Corporation.

”There is no better friend of the NYU Tisch Center than Jonathan Tisch, who has been an indefatigable chair of the Center’s prestigious annual conference for 15 years and an ardent promoter of the travel and tourism industries in New York City and the nation at large,” said Robert Lapiner, dean of the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies, home to the NYU Tisch Center.

“Jon Tisch’s leadership of the NYU conference is noteworthy among his tireless efforts to educate businesses, policy makers, and the public about the significant economic, social, and diplomatic contributions of the lodging and travel sectors. These activities continue the proud legacy of his late father, Preston Robert "Bob" Tisch—the Center’s namesake—an industry pioneer and visionary.  We are additionally grateful that like his father, Jon’s commitment of time, support, and guidance to the students, faculty, and educational mission of NYU-SCPS and the Tisch Center is unparalleled.”

Jonathan Tisch was a founder and long-time chairman of the Travel Business Roundtable and, since 2009, serves as chairman emeritus of its successor organization, the United States Travel Association. In his role as a national leader of travel and tourism, Tisch frequently can be seen in the media touting the industry’s importance to the economy as a vehicle for economic development and job creation. He has received numerous honors and accolades for his leadership, including “Hotel Person of the Year” by Travel Agent magazine, one of the “Business Travel Industry’s Most Influential Executives” by Business Travel News, and one of the “25 Most Influential People in the Meetings Industry” by Meeting News magazine.

Tisch is also committed to a vibrant tourism industry in New York City, where for nearly six years he served as chairman of NYC & Company, the city’s official tourism marketing agency and local convention and visitors’ bureau. Concurrent with his national efforts to help stimulate travel and tourism in the aftermath of September 11th, Tisch served as chairman of “New York Rising,” a task force established to help rebuild the city economy through the promotion and revival of tourism. In recognition of his leadership and civic involvement, Crain’s New York Business named Tisch one of the “Top Ten Most Influential Business Leaders,” and he was named the 2006 “CEO of the Year” by the Executive Council of New York.

“Across his 15-year tenure as conference chair, Jonathan Tisch has worked determinedly to maintain and evolve the event’s vital role as a barometer for the industry and, in doing so, has raised the conference’s profile as the premier hospitality finance and development forum of its kind,” says Lalia Rach, divisional dean and HVS International Chair of the NYU Tisch Center.

She adds, “Jon Tisch’s ability to annually attract superior speakers such as Al Gore, Donald Trump, and Steve Wynn—and, this year, Jamie Dimon and Brian Williams—certainly demonstrates the respect he enjoys for his prominence in business and civic life.  Everyone associated with the Conference and the Tisch Center faculty, students, staff, and devoted Board of Advisors are grateful for his leadership and guidance during this time of both challenge and opportunity for the industry.”

Tisch is also the author of two best-selling books, The Power of We: Succeeding Through Partnerships and Chocolates on the Pillow Aren’t Enough: Reinventing the Customer Experience, and the host of television’s Beyond the Boardroom, a series of one-on-one interviews with preeminent CEOs and business luminaries. Tisch is currently writing a third book, Citizen You: Doing Your Part to Change the World, and frequently guest lecturers to the undergraduate and graduate students at the NYU Tisch Center.

This year, the conference chair and executive planning committee have developed an extraordinary program agenda for the industry’s extraordinary times. Hosted by the NYU Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management and sponsored by the leading hospitality organizations, the conference is the premier hospitality finance and development forum of its kind where global hotel CEOs, analysts, and other hospitality leaders gather to discuss current and future developments in the industry. The conference features general sessions, workshops and networking that provide insight, dialogue, and opportunity for those in the hotel investment and finance industry. Graduate and undergraduate students pursuing industry degrees at the NYU Tisch Center receive academic scholarships thanks to the generosity of conference patrons and sponsors.

Registration for the conference is open, and the full program agenda is now available online. For more information, please visit www.nyu.edu/hospitalityconference or follow NYU on Twitter: http://twitter.com/nyuhospitality.
