NYU-SCPS Offers Writers Winter Term Intensive: "The Craft of the Story"

NEW YORK, December 22, 2009 - “The Craft of the Story,” an intensive four-day program which teaches beginner and intermediate-level writers the fundamentals of storytelling as they focus on fiction writing, memoir writing, or screenwriting, will launch this winter at the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS).

Offered through the Division of Liberal Studies and Allied Arts, “The Craft of the Story” features lectures on technique, writing exercises, and directed readings or screenings of relevant works.  Under the direction of a successful writer and teacher in their chosen area of concentration – fiction, memoir, or screenwriting – students will immerse themselves in writing, attending two 3-hour sessions a day.

The program will also provide students with the opportunity to connect with faculty and with each other during special events such as the opening reception and a closing celebration with student readings. On the evening of Friday, January 15, special guest Mark Jude Poirier(novelist and screenwriter, Smart People) will read from his work and answer questions on the connections and commonalities between prose and film storytelling. On Saturday, January 16, program director Adam Sexton and film producer Maureen Ryan (Man on Wire) will offer a presentation on applying to graduate programs in writing.
