NEW YORK, November 2, 2010 - The NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate has announced that Carl Weisbrod, the former president of Trinity Real Estate (the real estate arm of the downtown church), has joined the faculty as a clinical professor and academic chair of the newly created concentration in Global Real Estate. Weisbrod, who also served as a city official for many years, had announced plans to step down from his post at Trinity Church in May.
As one of the city’s leading experts on public/private commercial real estate and neighborhood development, Weisbrod oversaw six million square feet of commercial property that is owned and managed by Trinity Church.
Weisbrod will officially join the NYU Schack faculty in January 2011 and will begin teaching in the fall semester. He will help guide the implementation and recruitment of faculty for the courses related to the concentration in Global Real Estate. Weisbrod also will continue to serve as a consultant to Trinity relating to its neighborhood development strategies.
Weisbrod has had a distinguished career in several public initiatives focused on revitalizing and developing New York City neighborhoods. Beginning in the 1970’s, he led the successful city and state efforts to revive the Times Square area. During this period he served as the executive director of the New York City Department of City Planning, then became the president of the 42nd Street Development Project, Inc., which was a subsidiary of the New York State Urban Development Corporation. From 1990 to 1994, Weisbrod was founding president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation. In 2002, Crain’s New York Business named him one of the “100 Most Influential Leaders in Business.”
Prior to joining Trinity in 2005, he was the founding president of the Alliance for Downtown New York. As the nation’s largest business improvement district, the Alliance is charged with revitalizing lower Manhattan. Immediately following the 9/11 attacks, the Alliance became a central conduit for rebuilding funds and relief efforts.
Weisbrod currently serves as the chairman of the New York State Health Foundation, which funds innovative health care programs throughout New York State. He is director of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC), the Convention Center Development Corporation (CCDC), the Trust for Governors Island, and, the Urban Land Institute, among other organizations. He also is a former trustee of the Ford Foundation.
A graduate of Cornell University and the New York University School of Law, Weisbrod lives in New York with his wife Jody Adams, a Family Court Judge.
