NEW YORK, April 26, 2010—Interactive content and video have become king on the Internet. Recent studies have shown, for example, that Americans watch roughly 33 billion video clips per month online. With the new normal in Web browsing meaning interactivity and multi-platform browsing, demand is higher than ever for competent Web designers that can handle multiple formats.
To answer this demand, the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies (www.scps.nyu.edu) today announced a professional Certificate in Web Production program.
The certificate, which begins in the fall 2010 semester, will require nine courses. These classes cover such topics as Web law, Web production, media management, information architecture, and graphic design for the Web, including color systems and usability. Formats are intended for working professionals, with all classes meeting evenings and weekends. The program is offered by the department of Design, Digital Arts and Film, within the NYU-SCPS Division of Media Industry Studies and Design.
“There is a wide swath of industries using specially-produced content, including video, interactive gaming and embeddable widgets,” said Mary Domowicz, academic director, Design, Digital Arts and Film. “Successful businesses will have to address high tech needs effectively, and this program offers training in the design and production skills necessary to thrive.”
This new program aims to position students to take advantage of predicted job growth and expanding business opportunities in the field. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the “computer scientists and database administrators” job market is expected to grow 37 percent by 2016, meaning there will be plenty of room for motivated, skilled designers who can harness the full functionality of the Web. On top of that, Nielsen reports that business owners have been spending 82 percent more time on social media networks over the past year, and thus 66 percent of business owners say they have plans to invest in marketing on the online networks.
