NEW YORK, April 25, 2011 – "The Craft of the Story," an intensive four-day program that teaches beginner and intermediate-level writers the fundamentals of storytelling in various genres, runs next month at the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS).
The faculty includes noted writers Ann Napolitano, author of Within Arm’s Reach and A Good Hard Look (teaching fiction writing); Melissa Febos, author of Whip Smart (teaching memoir writing); and Christina Lazaridi, the Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of One Day Crossing and Coming Up Roses (teaching screenwriting).
Offered through the NYU-SCPS Division of Liberal Studies and Allied Arts, "The Craft of the Story" features lectures on technique, writing exercises, and directed readings or screenings of relevant works. Under the direction of a successful writer and teacher in their chosen area of concentration – fiction, memoir, or screenwriting – students will immerse themselves in writing, attending two 3-hour sessions a day.
The program will also provide students with the opportunity to connect with faculty and with each other during a variety of special events. On the evening of Thursday, May 12, Jennifer Belle, author of Going Down (which she adapted as a screenplay) and three other novels, will discuss similarities and differences between writing for the page and for the screen. On Saturday, May 14, program director and author of Master Class in Fiction Writing Adam Sexton will offer a presentation on applying to graduate programs in writing. The intensive concludes after class on Sunday, May 15, with a student reading and closing celebration at NYU’s Glucksmann Ireland House.
