NEW YORK, November 7, 2016 – The NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Schack Institute of Real Estate will host its 49th Annual Conference on Capital Markets in Real Estate, titled “The Big Pivot: Real Estate Capital Markets Adapt to an Uncertain World,” on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at The Pierre. Leaders of the global real estate industry will discuss how they are pivoting their businesses and investment strategies to put real estate capital to work.
Nearly a decade after the real estate market reached its pre-crisis peak, global investors and their capital providers face persistent headwinds, ranging from a volatile outlook for the world economy to political instability in historic safe havens for investment. Balancing these challenges with a thirst for yield, investors and lenders across every layer of the capital stack also must contend with changes in the ways that we finance real estate and the fundamental shifts in how we ultimately use space.
One of the highlights of the Conference will be a conversation between real estate legend Larry A. Silverstein, chairman and president of Silverstein Properties and chairman emeritus and founder of the NYUSPS Schack Institute of Real Estate, and James D. Kuhn, president of Newmark Grubb Knight Frank and chair of the advisory board of the Schack Institute.
Among the timely panel discussions on the agenda this year, the Conference will present its annual “The Golden Apple: The Mount Rushmore of New York City Real Estate” panel, featuring New York City real estate titans MaryAnne Gilmartin, president and chief executive officer, Forest City Ratner Companies; Scott Rechler ’90, chairman and chief executive officer, RXR Realty; Stephen M. Ross, chairman and founder, Related Companies; and William C. Rudin, vice chairman and chief executive officer, Rudin Management Company. This panel will be moderated by Conference Chair Robert S. Blumenthal, vice chairman and managing director, Americas Real Estate, Gaming, Lodging and Leisure Group, Deutsche Bank Securities.
In addition, other panels will discuss global debt capital flows; drivers of real estate private equity; and global equity capital flows. Moderated by Jonathan L. Mechanic, chairman of real estate and partner of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, the closing panel, “Cities Within Cities: The New Urban Landscape,” will feature high-profile executives Jeff T. Blau, chief executive officer, Related Companies; Marty Burger, chief executive officer, Silverstein Properties; and Richard S. Lefrak, chairman and chief executive officer, LeFrak.

About the NYU School of Professional Studies Schack Institute of Real Estate
The NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Schack Institute of Real Estate (sps.nyu.edu/schack) was founded in 1967 at the initiative of prominent members of the New York City real estate community, who encouraged NYU to establish an academic center that would provide a world-class education for industry professionals. Nearly 50 years later, the Schack Institute is at the forefront of real estate education and is recognized globally as one of the world’s leading centers of real estate research and pedagogy.
