Mastering English Program-Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the Mastering English Program. If your question is not covered here, please contact us directly at alimasteringenglishny@nyu.edu.

Mastering English is offered during the summer, fall, winter, and spring.

The first summer session runs for two weeks only. The second summer session takes place over three weeks. The classes and activities in both sessions will be similar, with the first session having a smaller number due to its two-week duration.

Students taking part in the Mastering English Program will not be sponsored for a F-1 visa. Please consult the US Embassy in your country to check the visa requirements for your entry into the US.

Each course is designed to suit different needs and age groups. Please review the course descriptions, and if you have additional questions or would like help from one of our staff members to find the course that best suits your needs, please email us at alimasteringenglishny@nyu.edu.

The application process has two components: an online form and a PDF release form. Please email the completed PDF form to alimasteringenglishny@nyu.edu. Once both forms have been submitted, you will receive confirmation from our staff.

Currently, there are no special admissions requirements for international students. Successful applicants will be required to take an online placement test to help our faculty tailor class content and assist in the grouping of students with similar levels of English proficiency. More information regarding this test will be provided to successful applicants.

Due to the limited number of spaces available, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program cost varies by course and covers tuition and fees.

Mastering English is a short-term program. Participants in short-term programs are not eligible for financial aid at NYU, and we are unable to offer scholarships at this time.

Payment will be made by direct wire transfer to the NYU Bursar’s office. Further instructions will be provided upon your acceptance to the program.

Winter Term

Housing and meal plans are not available for the Mastering English Winter Program. Please email alimasteringenglishnyc@nyu.edu for suggested accommodations in the New York City area.

Summer Term

Please visit NYU Summer Housing for the latest information about summer housing and meal plan options.

NYU on-campus housing during the program period is available along with meal plans only for the summer term. High school students are required to live on campus and must be enrolled in a NYU meal plan. College and adult students may choose to live on campus but it is optional.

Our students are housed in any one of our residence halls available during the summer months. Our residence halls are located close to classrooms and facilities on campus or are a short subway ride from campus. High school students will be required to live in the designated minors dorm and must comply with the designated curfew per NYU policy.

Please Note: NYU housing and meal plans are only offered during the summer term.

Housing costs are based upon twin share, with two students per room for all college and high school courses. Single rooms for students enrolled in these courses can be requested for an additional cost, but are subject to availability.

Housing costs for English Lifelong Learning  participants is for single-room lodging.

Please Note: NYU housing and meal plans are only offered during the summer term.

You will be able to check-in one day before and check-out one day after the start of the program session. As there are a large number of students residing on campus during the summer, you may only reside in the dorm during your program. This is an NYU policy and no exceptions will be made. Outside of the program dates, you will need to organize alternative accommodations if you wish to remain in the city.

Please Note: NYU housing and meal plans are only offered during the summer term.
