The ALI Advantage

An international student advisor offers counsel on visas, housing, personal matters, and U.S. college applications and admissions.

As a student at the NYU School of Professional Studies American Language Institute (ALI), you have the opportunity to cultivate relationships and to engage in dialogue with other English language learners from around the city, the country, and the globe, whose experiences parallel your own. You also acquire the distinct competitive advantage of honing your English language proficiency at a world-renowned university with an expansive global presence—adding a powerful NYU credential to your résumé.

Individualized Attention
The American Language Institute (ALI) is dedicated to helping you adjust to life in New York so that your experience will be successful and rewarding. An international student advisor offers counsel on visas, housing, personal matters, and U.S. college applications and admissions. Placement testing and registration at ALI include face-to-face, one-on-one interviews that ensure students are guided as to which classes are most appropriate for them. ALI instructors take an interest in the personal welfare of their students, providing support and advice, and serving as personal and professional mentors.

Tickets to concerts and plays, tours of the city and nearby states, and visits to American homes are all available to ALI students at no charge or at a minimal cost.

Learning Through Experience

Experiential learning is a cornerstone of the ALI philosophy. Faculty members design lessons in ways that transport the outside world into the classroom, and that bring classroom learning out and into the city. They make NYU’s goal to be a university that is "in and of the city and in and of the world," a reality. Each term, instructors identify student interests that help to determine what dimensions of the New York experience they will focus upon. Outings include field trips to popular destinations such as the United Nations, the New York Stock Exchange, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and various museums.

Outstanding Faculty

ALI students enjoy access to the University's world-class library system and computer labs, as well as a diverse range of cultural events and state-of-the-art athletic facilities.

ALI instructors are highly trained professionals who understand how to help students navigate the complexities of mastering a second language. They hold advanced degrees in TESOL and other related fields. ALI faculty members have all lived abroad and understand the unique challenges of learning a new language. They design lessons that extend beyond the traditional classroom through outings and field trips to popular destinations such as the United Nations, the New York Stock Exchange, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and various museums.
