I am excited about the recent launch of the M.S. in Translation, which represents an appropriate response to the growing professionalization of the translation field in this country.
In today’s increasingly global environment, translators in the United States compete against their colleagues from around the world, who have been trained and educated in some of the finest translation schools. At the same time, the industry is experiencing an unprecedented boom. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the translation industry will grow by 24 percent in the 2006-2016 decade. International organizations, such as the United Nations and its affiliates, and the European Union, are experiencing a shortage of qualified translators. Internationally, the bar has been raised on what it takes to become a qualified translator.
The Master of Science in Translation focuses on three areas of translation: legal, financial, and software localization. These are some of the most important facets of translation, and the fields they represent are the bedrock of New York City industry and commerce. The program offers a solid education in translation theory and linguistic analysis, and has been designed to uphold academic responsibility, to integrate a high level of pragmatism, and to ensure that course content addresses real-world situations. Graduates of the program are prepared to tackle complex technical language challenges.
The online environment allows us to deliver course content that is developed by the most experienced and well-known theoreticians and practitioners from around the world. Courses takes place entirely online, and feature synchronous and asynchronous components. Students have the option of defending their thesis on-site at NYU or online, in real time.
