Opportunities and Outcomes

As globalization continues to impact business and international relations, translation plays an increasingly important role in cultural and economic exchanges. Opportunities for skilled interpreters and translators are expected to continue to grow as the need for professionals in the global business, legal, healthcare and homeland security sectors evolves. The NYU School of Professional Studies provides support in localizing and optimizing these career opportunities.

The program’s curricula takes into account that today’s translators must be able to address increasingly complex issues—from commercial and technical translation to software and website localization, a growing area in which translators adapt software and translate websites for international markets—and must be prepared with the background and the analytical skills to be effective in their chosen specializations. Course content includes discussions on the implications of technological advances such as terminology management and post-editing practices.

The M.S. in Translation provides the level of credentials that prospective employers and clients seek. Many job opportunities only are open to translators with a formal education. In addition, certain countries require translators to provide proof of certification or a higher level of formal education in order for them to be considered qualified to officially certify a translation for legal purposes.

Graduates of the MS in Translation program will be qualified to work with large and small businesses, government agencies, and international organizations like the United Nations as:

  • Translators
  • Editors
  • Terminologists
  • Project managers
  • Freelance consultants
