M.A. in Graphic Communications Management and Technology
Alumnus, Class of 2008
When John Tenwinkel wanted to advance his career in the graphic communications industry, he sought a master’s degree program that would provide him with expert instruction and the practical skills necessary to increase his value in the professional marketplace. In the M.A. in Graphic Communications Management and Technology at NYU-SCPS, he found a program that provided everything he was looking for and more. "This program is truly one-of-a-kind, " says Tenwinkel. "No other graduate degree in this area of study offers as comprehensive a curriculum and as hands-on an approach."
Tenwinkel credits the interaction between his instructors and his classmates with providing the unique character of the program. Faculty members are industry leaders who have expertise in topics such as executive leadership and quality control that is rarely found in traditional academic scenarios. Students are taught to use critical thinking to solve problems and to develop long-range solutions. During class, dialogue is consistently encouraged, and, as most students are experienced professionals, the classroom interaction becomes a vehicle for applied learning opportunities.
As a result of his NYU-SCPS experience, Tenwinkel has risen quickly through the ranks in the graphic communications field. He now holds the position of vice president of digital and distribution services at DG3 North America, where his responsibilities include overseeing the company’s digital print and fulfillment operations and managing a dedicated print and fulfillment site for a large investment bank. "As a member of the senior management team for a multimillion-dollar graphic communications firm, one needs to be prepared to manage client meetings and presentations, to create operating procedures, and to develop and execute growth strategies," explains Tenwinkel. "Thanks to the master’s degree program at NYU-SCPS, I have the foundation to not only meet these expectations, but to excel beyond them."
