M.A. in Graphic Communications Management and Technology
Alumna, Class of 2009
When she came to New York to participate in a United Nations internship in 2006, Junmian Sun already held degrees from universities in China and Malta. A computer programmer who wanted to do more than code, she gravitated toward the M.A. in Graphic Communications Management and Technology program at NYU-SCPS, which emphasized collaborative learning. One of the projects she became involved in was a year-long, public awareness campaign about human trafficking that was sponsored by the office of New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg.
A classmate who worked for a deputy mayor was assigned to research the topic and soon about 20 M.A. students became engaged. Academic Director Bonnie Blake and numerous faculty members offered guidance. "We learned a lot about how to design a marketing and advertising plan and pitch it to a client," says Sun, 28. The team attended a press conference with Mayor Bloomberg that drew attention to the campaign, dubbed "It’s Happening Here." Today, Sun works at MediaPost Communications, a job that evolved from an NYU-SCPS internship. "The M.A. in Graphic Communications Management and Technology program provided me with the necessary skills to work as part of a team," says Sun. "That’s the way it is done in the real world."
