The NYU School of Professional Studies Health and Care Programs provide a range of courses and diploma programs for students in every phase of their careers—from entry-level professionals who are just deciding on their employment path to clinical professionals who seek to explore new career options or to fine tune their skill sets in healthcare.

Health Information Management

The Health Information Management (HIM) programs provide skills-based training in a diverse profession that incorporates medicine, management, finance, information technology, and law. They encompass all aspects of managing patient health information and medical records. HIM professionals work in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, clinics, government agencies, and insurance providers.

With the explosion of information in the medical field, medical coders are in higher demand than ever before, particularly in the New York metro area. Medical codes are used in the healthcare industry to describe the clinical picture of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In just four semesters enrolled in the Diploma in Medical Coding, you will become proficient in ICD-9, with an open enrollment option in ICD-10, if you are interested in receiving training in both systems.

Developed in conjunction with professionals from NYU Langone Medical Center, the Advanced Diploma in Clinical Documentation Improvement for Medical Professionals is a one-semester, blended program that offers students with a clinical background the opportunity to develop the critical skills required of CDI specialists, including knowledge of coding guidelines and principles. At the completion of this advanced diploma students are able to: understand the role of CDS and the function of CDI programs, understand query concepts and formulate physician queries, and facilitate improvement in the overall quality of documentation.

Developed in conjunction with professionals from NYU Langone Medical Center, the Advanced Diploma in Clinical Documentation Improvement for Professional Coders is a one-semester, blended program that offers students with a coding background the opportunity to develop critical skills required of CDI specialists. At the completion of this advanced diploma students are able to; understand the role of CDS and the function of CDI programs, understand query concepts and formulate physician queries, and facilitate improvement in the overall quality of documentation.

This Advanced Diploma in Healthcare Informatics for Clinicians, which can be completed in one semester in a blended format, provides you with the skill sets necessary to play an integral role in informatics for a healthcare organization. Learn how to integrate clinical workflow information using leading electronic medical records applications such as Epic. Training in clinical project management, clinical systems analysis, clinical data analysis and management, and clinical infrastructure and security rounds out the diploma to give clinicians a comprehensive view of managing healthcare informatics.

New career opportunities are emerging in the areas of childcare and in several facets of health care administration. Individual career advancement courses in these areas can be taken alone or in groups to build you skills and your knowledge for career change or advancement.
