The 20th anniversary REIT Symposium presented an opportunity for an in-depth examination of the trends and the developments in the REIT Revolution that have occurred over the past 20 years. In addition, the Symposium, as always, provided informed predictions on the direction in which REITs are heading. An extraordinary group of speakers considered whether we should expect continuing consolidation and M&A activity until, as some have predicted, only 30 mega-REITs are left owning an ever-increasing share of the world's commercial real estate; whether U.S. REITs will finally take the plunge across the pond and traverse borders to truly expand globally; whether we can expect another wave of privatizations; what's on the horizon in terms of governance changes and activist shareholders; and which new frontiers and property types REITs will permeate, and how quickly; among many other topics.
This year's keynote speaker was Samuel Zell. The Symposium also featured conversations with Martin Cohen, Jonathan Gray, and Barry Sternlicht, as well as many of the leading CEOs, bankers, analysts, and other professionals in the REIT and real estate industries.
