Support Services Designed With You in Mind

file

Dear Prospective Student,

When you enroll in the McGhee Division, you will join a community of highly motivated students, from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds—all striving to acquire the knowledge and the skills that will enrich their lives and enhance their careers.

The quality of this experience, and the depth of the well-rounded education you will receive is what sets McGhee far apart from similar programs. At McGhee, we believe that the most meaningful learning—the kind that can truly transform your life and your future—requires you to be excited, engaged, and successful, in the classroom and beyond. To ensure that you make the most of your education, we encourage a continuous and thoughtful exchange of ideas between faculty members and students, we work to cultivate a dynamic student community, and—especially important—we offer outstanding and highly personalized student services.

McGhee Students Appreciate Individualized Support

A recent survey of our students indicated:

  • Overwhelming satisfaction with the level of student-faculty interaction
  • Great appreciation for help from academic advisors

From your first day as a McGhee student, our professional student services staff will be there to acclimate you to academic life; to help you to define your goals and your objectives; and to ensure you have a truly fulfilling educational experience. The support with which you are provided takes many different forms and depends upon your needs and where you are in your educational and professional career.

  • As a new student, you are assigned an academic advisor who will familiarize you with the student services and the resources available to you through McGhee, through NYU-SCPS, and through the University at large. Together, you will discuss your academic and career goals and will work towards them. You also will review your degree requirements and will develop a plan to ensure that you stay on track academically. Each semester, you will meet with your advisor to review your progress and choose your courses for the upcoming term.

  • New students also benefit from the McGhee Ambassador Program, in which student ambassadors contact newly admitted students to familiarize them with School and University resources, and to share their McGhee experiences.

  • If you have education or life experience that you bring to McGhee, you may be able to earn up to half of the credits towards your degree through our popular Prior-Learning Assessment (PLA) Program, which includes evaluation of college-level proficiency testing and transfer credits, as well as evaluation of prior learning through a portfolio you develop through a two-credit seminar. Military veterans find this option highly beneficial. Your advisor can help to determine which pathways will best support your goals.

  • As a transfer student, if you have questions about transfer credit, the McGhee Advising Office can informally evaluate potential transfer credit using unofficial transcripts.

  • As an enrolled student, if you need extra academic support in certain subject areas, the McGhee Division offers complimentary, one-on-one tutoring in writing, math, accounting, economics, and statistics.

  • If you are in need of career advisement, help is available from McGhee advisors and faculty members, and the NYU Wasserman Center for Career Development. McGhee students can schedule one-on-one appointments with the Wasserman Center to discuss career goals, to strategize about a job search, or to review their résumé and cover letters.

Whether your McGhee experience is a continuation of studies you began at another institution, or it is your first venture into higher education, know that you will find the support you need to successfully pursue—and to fulfill—your goal of earning a world-class education.

Sincerely,

Steven Hubbard, Ph.D.
