McGhee Student Life: Intellectual Stimulation and Professional Growth

NYU-SCPS Office of Student Life and Alumni Relations

This office coordinates student life and community service opportunities in close collaboration with McGhee faculty members and administrators; the Student Council and student clubs; and the University offices that support all NYU students.

As a McGhee student, your overall experience will extend far beyond classroom learning. Student life is infused with a wealth of extracurricular and professionally oriented activities that offer the chance to meet and to mingle with faculty members, peers, alumni, and guest lecturers in your area of study as well as with those from other academic areas.

You can develop your leadership abilities through participation in student clubs and the NYU-SCPS student government. In addition, you can expand your professional affiliations through alumni mentorship and industry-specific networking opportunities. Attending School and University sponsored cultural and public affairs events will help to broaden your perspective, and will provide a forum for creativity and the exchange of ideas.

Our students lead busy lives, often juggling study, family responsibilities, and full- or part-time careers. We are here to ensure that they make the most of their time at McGhee, and therefore, work diligently to schedule activities at the times that encourage the greatest amount of participation.

  • As a member of the McGhee and the NYU-SCPS community, you will benefit from learning opportunities in and outside the classroom. Our events are designed to connect you with successful professionals in your field and to facilitate the exchange of ideas, and increase your understanding of industry trends, challenges and opportunities.
  • As a part of the NYU student community, all of the resources, services, and opportunities of a world-class research university in a global capital are available to you.

Alumni Panels and Networking Events

McGhee alumni are professionals in a wide range of fields, in the New York City region and all over the world, and are a valuable resource for students. In addition to the career resources available through your program, the NYU-SCPS Office of Student Life and Alumni Relations hosts alumni panels and networking events that provide students with the opportunity to meet and to network with alumni from a variety of industry sectors.

The School's Student-Alumni Connection Series encourages students to build relationships with alumni who can help to expand their professional network and share knowledge about their own career paths. One recent event gathered students and alumni for “LinkedIn LIVE” – a multimedia and real-time social networking event. Whether you are a natural at networking or you are new to it, our student and alumni leaders will help to introduce you to others attending these events.

At NYU-SCPS, student clubs reflect the professional passions and creative pursuits of our students themselves, and form the foundation of our student community. For McGhee students, they serve to integrate you further into the University community; enhance your academic and social experience; and foster life-long relationships, networking opportunities, and a strong sense of School community.

A sampling of McGhee clubs includes:

  • Culture Club (Anthropology/Sociology)
  • D/ComM (Digital Communications and Media)
  • Economics Club—A recent event was titled: Let Your Degree Work For You: How to Maximize Your Marketability
  • The FORC’S Organization (Information Systems Management)
  • History Club
  • International Studies Club
  • Media Studies Club
  • New York Literary Club—A recent event hosted author and activist Dr. Nawal El Saadawi on the Egyptian Revolution [PDF]
  • Psychology Club—A recent event featured a book talk with three-time Emmy Award winner, veteran TV news anchor and senior correspondent, Rita Crosby
  • Real Estate Club
  • Writing Club

McGhee clubs also collaborate with other student groups across NYU-SCPS to offer additional opportunities for professional development, community service, and relationship building with successful alumni.

The Student Council, with support from the NYU-SCPS Office of Student Life, works to enhance student life at NYU-SCPS. Members of the Student Council act as advocates for students, bringing their ideas and concerns to faculty members and administrative leadership, serving as an information resource, and providing opportunities to interact with peers from across NYU-SCPS and NYU. In addition, the Student Council oversees club activities and their funding.

The Student Council hosts social events and industry specific—as well as cross-disciplinary—community engagement opportunities, such as:

  • Career seminars, graduate school information workshops, community service initiatives, and events that enhance networking opportunities and promote school spirit.
  • Weekend programs that offer students easy (and free or affordable) access to the best of New York’s cultural institutions, and events. Enjoy museums, art galleries, cultural heritage tours, and classical music, as well as activities that embrace the City’s many traditions – from ice skating in Central Park and New York Knicks basketball games to Broadway shows, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and outdoor movie nights.

In addition to the Student Council and student clubs, McGhee hosts a wide range of special events to cultivate a community-based atmosphere and to stimulate the intellectual exchange of ideas, experiences, and cultural understanding.

  • New Student Reception and Orientation. For many students, the first day of class may be the first time—or the first time in a long while—that they have set foot on a college campus. To help new students acclimate to undergraduate life and to learn more about McGhee, NYU-SCPS, and the University, we host a New Student Reception and Orientation at the start of each semester. This informal gathering introduces students to faculty members, advisors, and their peers to learn more about the academic support services and resources available to them.
  • Alpha Sigma Lambda Induction Ceremony. Alpha Sigma Lambda is a national honor society devoted to the advancement of scholarship through the recognition of academically outstanding adult students. Eligible McGhee students are inducted at an annual spring ceremony, with alumni and faculty members in attendance.
  • Original Research—Vali Menon Symposium. Organized by the NYU chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda, this unique annual symposium features presentations of innovative research by McGhee faculty members, students, and alumni.
  • George Sideris Honors and Scholars Symposium. Named in honor of the late George Sideris, a former McGhee professor, this annual symposium highlights the academic achievements of McGhee students who have received scholarships, awards, or honors, or who have otherwise excelled in their fields.
  • Upsilon Phi Delta Induction Ceremony. Upsilon Phi Delta is a national honor society for students in healthcare administration. Eligible McGhee students are inducted at an annual spring ceremony.
  • Digital Communications and Media—CrossRoads Series. These interactive panels introduce students to media and digital communication graduates who share their career experience and academic paths. Panelists have included professionals from Facebook and NBC Universal, as well as NYU scholars.
  • Creative Writing—Inside/Outside Events. These live readings and discussions offer students a chance to hear from renowned writers in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Recent guests have included highly acclaimed memoirist and poet Nick Flynn, and author Phillip Lopate.
  • Film—Sharp Focus Documentary Series. These special screenings bring together a panel of academics and filmmakers to watch and to discuss documentaries that focus on social, political, or cultural issues. Past films have included Exit Through the Gift Shop, about British street artist Banksy; American Casino, an exploration of the subprime lending scandal; and Flow, about the corporate takeover of water systems in developing nations.
