ADMISSIONS AND PLACEMENT EXAMS
THE ADMISSIONS EXAM
The Admissions Exam is a College Board test designed for adult students to assess a student’s
academic ability and the brand name is Accuplacer.
There are two sections on the Admissions Exam:
-
Reading Comprehension—Two types of questions are asked on this section of the
exam. The first consists of a reading passage followed by a question based on the text. The second
type, sentence relationships, presents two sentences followed by a question about the relationship
between the two sentences.
-
Sentence Skills—Two types of questions are asked on this section of the exam.
Sentence correction questions ask you to choose the most appropriate word or phrase to substitute
for the underlined portion of the sentence. Construction shift questions ask that a sentence be
rewritten according to the criteria shown, while maintaining essentially the same meaning as the
original sentence.
The Admissions Exam is offered at the SCPS Testing Center at 145 Fourth Avenue. For more
information on the testing schedule, call (212) 998-7100.
PLACEMENT EXAMS
All admitted students are required to take the writing and math placement exams.
The Math Placement Exam is offered at the SCPS Testing Center. The exam is
computerized and adaptive, which means that the computer automatically determines which questions
are presented to you based on your responses to prior questions. A Test Administrator is always
present should you have any questions or problems. For more information on the testing schedule,
call (212) 998-7100.
The Writing Placement Exam asks students to read a short passage and then to
respond to the author's position. You are given 1 ½ hours to compose your response. The Writing
Placement Exam is administered by the McGhee Writing Department.
