The American Language Institute evaluates the English language proficiency of all students prior to registration. This evaluation assesses grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension, and writing and speaking abilities. It also includes a personal interview with Institute faculty for the purposes of counseling and course selection.
THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE REPORT
Speakers of other languages often need an official statement of their English language proficiency. At the student’s written request, this Institute report will be sent to a school, organization, or sponsoring agency.
THE REGISTRATION PROCESS
Only students with a faculty advisor’s signed course recommendation may register. Students must complete the registration process to be sure of a place in class. Registration includes:

An international student advisor is available to counsel students about visas, as well as academic and personal matters and facilitates student participation in the life of the University and the city.

When returning the completed application, please enclose a $150 nonrefundable application fee, payable to New York University, as well as information verifying that sufficient financial support will be provided. Accepted overseas applicants will receive a formal letter of admission and a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20). You may then apply for a student (F-1) visa at a United States Consulate or other appropriate U.S. agency. Since requirements vary in different areas, applicants for student visas should check the U.S. office in their country for specific requirements.
