OXFORD UNIVERSITY STUDY PROGRAM
AT CHRIST CHURCH COLLEGE, OXFORD

FOOTSTEPS TO THE PAST:
EXPLORING ENGLAND’S HISTORY

July 8 - 21, 2012
2,590 for one week; $5,180 for two weeks*

Experience history at every step as you stay, study, and dine on the breathtaking Oxford University campus at Christ Church College, which was founded in 1525 and whose royal guests have included Elizabeth I and, in the 19th century, the Prince Regent. What could be a better backdrop for the courses we are offering this year in our acclaimed program, which are specially created for this NYU group? Our program, a unique collaboration between Oxford University and NYU-SCPS, was inaugurated in 2000 and offers you the opportunity to register for either one or two weeks and enjoy many special features, including lectures, course related field trips, and special events that have been created and arranged solely for NYU participants. Enrollment is open to all.

Enjoy three meals daily in the impressive 16th-century dining hall; explore the magnificent on-site medieval cathedral with its ancient cloister; relax in the college’s lovely gardens; or stroll to the nearby River Isis, which runs past the college’s famous meadow. The college is very close to the center of the historic city of Oxford and concert halls, bookshops, and the renowned Ashmolean Museum.

The NYU-SCPS courses are taught by distinguished Oxford tutors who are very popular with our students. Additional lectures are given by accompanying NYU faculty. No grades are issued.

ACADEMICS

WEEK ONE; JANE AUSTEN'S REGENCY ENGLAND (July 8 – 14, 2012)
The 19th century evoked in Jane Austen’s novels is familiar to generations of readers and, latterly, film viewers. Her world of country houses was only a small corner of the far wider world of the England in which she lived. This course explores that wider world as well as the Prince Regent’s lavish lifestyle, political feuds, the country’s naval and military heroes, and Regency scandals. Study the growth of England’s major cities as a contrast to the peaceful market towns that Jane Austen knew so well.

WEEK TWO; ELIZABETH I AND HER COURTIERS (July 15 – 21, 2012)
Elizabeth I’s reign was, simultaneously, a time of great artistic creativity and one of espionage, court intrigues, diplomacy, and political plots. Study the role of the Queen’s important courtiers, including Robert Dudley; William Cecil; spymaster Francis Walsingham; privateer Sir Walter Raleigh; Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex; and Sir Henry Lee, Elizabeth’s Master of the Tournament. Explore the roles of these and other important courtiers, their achievements, feuds, and successes at the court of Gloriana, The Virgin Queen.

Itinerary includes: Academic program, 6 nights’ accommodation in private single rooms at Christ Church College (or 13 nights’ accommodation for both weeks); all breakfasts, lunches, and dinners at Christ Church daily (breakfast only on the intervening Saturday if you are registering for both weeks); special events; reading lists; and a pre-departure briefing.

Rooms are comfortably furnished with refrigerators and tea/coffee-making facilities, and are serviced daily. A limited number of single rooms with private showers and toilets (en suite rooms) are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you wish to apply for a single room with en suite, please send your registration as quickly as possible. A $450 per-week supplement for an en suite room applies.

Airfare is not included: Take advantage of the competitive fares to London. Direct bus services from Heathrow Airport to Oxford are excellent and run frequently.

Please note: This is a very popular program. Enrollment is strictly limited to 18 students per course and the program often fills by early spring. We strongly urge you to register as soon as possible.
