Are you a prospective or practicing appraiser or an arts professional looking to hone your skills and expand your realm of expertise in the fine and decorative arts? This certificate explores the techniques and practices of art appraisal in-depth and provides you with the critical knowledge and competence in appraising paintings, furniture, jewelry, and more.

Upon completion of the program, students have attained the following:

  • Understanding of all the essential skills necessary to be an appraiser, or to work in a gallery, auction house, or insurance company, as an appraisal expert.
  • Ability to objectively and critically evaluate fine and decorative arts.
  • Familiarity with the legal and ethical aspects of appraising.
  • Research skills and knowledge of the methodologies used by appraisers.
  • Specialized knowledge in various fields within appraisal studies, such as American and European paintings and drawings, Asian art, silver, arts and crafts, furniture, modern design, fashion, photography, books, and jewelry.

This certificate is awarded to those who successfully complete six required courses and four 10-session electives (or the equivalent in five-session electives). Electives may include topics such as jewelry appraising, American furniture, photography appraisal, and collecting and appraising rare books.

This certificate has been restructured. Those presently working on the certificate have four years to complete their coursework based on the requirements in the SCPS Bulletin from the semester in which they started.
