UNLOCKING THE TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The TIFF's new co-director, Cameron Bailey, spoke this past spring at NYU with SCPS film adjunct professor Thom Powers about how the festival creates its always "hot" line up.

Cameron Bailey has worked extensively as a filmmaker and journalist for outlets such as Sundance Channel and NOW Magazine. This year, he steps into a leadership position at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (Sept. 4-13). As a programmer at the festival for 12 years, Bailey has specialized in the cinema of American independents, Africa, and South Asia.

They discussed how the Toronto festival creates its renowned line up of sections including:

  • Discovery for emerging filmmakers;
  • Visions for cutting edge work;
  • Real to Reel for documentary; and
  • Galas known for launching Oscar nominees.

Also discussed were future developments for TIFF and questions from the audience.
