CERTIFICATE IN CINEMATOGRAPHY

Explore the art of cinematography and learn to capture motion picture images. Working with 16mm film, DV, and HD video, receive hands-on training in lighting, film and video camera operation, as well as the theoretical and aesthetic aspects of cinematography. The images the cinematographer brings to the screen come from the artistic vision, imagination, and skill of the cinematographer as he or she works within a collaborative relationship with fellow artists.

Upon completion of the program, students have covered:

  • Operation of 16mm film cameras, as well as DV and HD video cameras.
  • Structure and job responsibilities of the camera unit of a film crew.
  • Principles of lenses, f-stops, film stocks, and lighting equipment.
  • Basic types of lighting, including basic special effects that can be done in-camera.
  • History and development of technology in cinematographic equipment such as dollys and steadicams.
  • How to compose a scene using the camera and use a photographic technique to tell a story visually.
  • Aesthetics of frame composition and an in-depth survey of the classic examples of artistic cinematography.
  • How to work and collaborate in a team-based environment within a production crew.

To earn the certificate, an average grade of B or higher is required indicating successful completion of the required material by taking Option 1 or Option 2.

This certificate has been restructured. Students who began this certificate prior to fall 2007 have four years to complete their certificate according to the requirements in the SCPS bulletin the semester they began. Call (212) 998-7171 for more information.

Cinematography Intensive

Develop your creative vision while learning effective lighting techniques and how to shoot 16mm film and digital video. Capture motion picture images using ARRI-SR2 cameras. Become familiar with SD and HD video formats along with camera functions using Panasonic DVX-100 and HVX-200 cameras. Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, discover how film stock, exposure, light, and composition affect the quality of an image. By experimenting with film and DV formats, develop your production skills and learn to select the right format for any project.
