CERTIFICATE IN DIGITAL VIDEO PRODUCTION

In this hands-on program, students learn how to direct, shoot, and edit their own short digital videos. The curriculum provides training in digital camera technology,lighting for digital video, digital audio recording, non-linear editing using Final Cut Pro, and an introduction to DVD production. Students perform technical exercises and work within a small production crew rotating responsibilities and helping one another complete individual projects. The program is led by a faculty of industry professionals who emphasize the skills needed to pursue a career in DV production and land their first job in the industry.

Upon completion of the program, students acquire the following skills: ?

Ability to write, produce, direct, edit, and shoot principal photography for a digital video focusing primarily on documentary and other non-fiction work

  • Planning, budgeting, and pre-production.
  • Production, editing, and distribution.
  • Low- and high-end digital video.
  • Video-to-film transfer theory.

This certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete the required material by taking Option 1 or 2. Option 2 includes one elective.

Digital Video Production Six-Week Intensive

This comprehensive program provides all of the basic technical skills necessary to make your own professional quality DV project. Learn the fundamentals of camera operation, lenses, filters, lighting set-ups, sound-recording, microphone options, and boom techniques. Receive a thorough introduction to editing with Final Cut Pro, including basic commands, setting up and building a timeline, cut options, titling, and audio and mix functions. Students work in crews to develop, direct, shoot, and edit one short narrative and one short documentary project. Instructors guide students through the pre-production, production, and post-production phases.

Students may enroll in the first two weeks, the last four weeks, or all six weeks.

Weeks One and Two
May 19–30, 2008
  • Techniques, technology, and craft of DV production.
  • Professional DV camera operations.
  • Lighting techniques.
  • Audio recording techniques.
  • Basics of digital editing with Final Cut Pro.

Weeks Three Through Six
June 2–27, 2008

  • Pre-production planning.
  • On-set procedures and protocols.
  • Improving upon technical skills.
  • Production on location and in the field.
  • Completion of one narrative and one documentary project each three to four minutes in length.
