Learn the essential elements of creating and launching a charitable organization in this weeklong, intensive program. In addition to addressing the basic logistical issues of a start-up organization, this course examines the philosophical and ethical dilemmas that often arise during the creation process. Students should come to the program with a basic idea for an organization. During the course, students will craft a brief and effective narrative and, through lectures and activities, explore a variety of techniques and resources available to them for creating and sustaining the organization. The course primarily addresses setting up a U.S.-based organization – operating either domestically or abroad. Supplemental information for internationally based organizations may be offered upon request. A student coursepack will be included in the tuition of the program. The course can count as two electives towards the Certificate in Global Philanthropy or Certificate in Global Affairs.
This course is ideal for anyone who wishes to develop a charitable organization or is otherwise involved with establishing a new organization. Prior nonprofit experience is not required.
