Google vs. Apple: Who Will Win? (March 2010)

“Google or Apple?” It’s the question foremost on the minds of mobile communications industry insiders and marketers trying to figure out how to effectively use mobile media to target audiences.

This issue was the topic of conversation at “Google vs. Apple: Who Will Win?”—the first in a series of mobile media panels hosted by the NYU-SCPS M.A. in Graphic Communications Management and Technology program. Before an audience of more than 300 guests at NYU, plus viewers of the live web-streamed program, a group of industry experts discussed industry developments and the latest Google and Apple products, and debated “which company will win the race for mobile media dominance?”


Join the M.A. Program in Graphic Communications Management and Technology in an engaging panel discussion on the burning topic of mobile media's future. Our panelists are industry leaders who will share their experiences with Google and Apple products, debate current mobile industry issues, and predict who will come out on top.

Tim Kaminski is the Art Director at Image Systems, a boutique agency in NYC. He has lent his designs to accounts such as; Canon, Cartier, Erno Laszlo, La Prairie, Pfizer and Visit Britain. Some of his other experiences have been designing promotional materials for Philip Morris, collateral for the launch of ImClone's Erbitux and direct marketing materials for Alloy Online. He started out at The Promotion Network in Dallas and moved to New York 10 years ago to pursue new opportunities in fine and commercial art. He has shown his own fine art and performance, as well as group projects in the Good/Bad Art Collective in Texas and New York. Tim has a BFA from the University of North Texas and is currently a Masters candidate at NYU in the Graphic Communications Management and Technology program.

Ansley Dunn is the Program Administrator for the M.A. in Graphic Communications Management and Technology program at NYU-SCPS. In this capacity,  Dunn advises students, helps develop curriculum, and recruits top talent among new students. As well, she serves on the program's Advisory Board Committees for  Curriculum, Program Initiatives , International, Marketing, Alumni, Mentoring/Career Guidance and the PRISM  Award Committee to support student scholarships. Prior to joining NYU, Dunn worked at some of New York's premier advertising agencies such as Grey and DDB where she helped craft new business pitches involving brand strategy as well as consumer promotions, digital and event marketing campaigns for leading clients such as LG Mobile Phones, Pfizer Health Solutions, Hasbro Toys and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Dunn holds a B.S./B.A. in International Business and Spanish from Appalachian State University.

Panelist Biographies:

Eric Litman is Chairman and CEO of Medialets, the most widely deployed rich media advertising and analytics platform for mobile. He is a pioneer of the Internet’s commercialization, and as a co-founder of Proxicom, helped to build one of the first, largest, and most successful publicly traded interactive agencies. Eric most recently served as Managing Director of WashingtonVC, an early-stage fund and incubator. Previously, Eric held senior executive roles in high-growth Internet businesses, as founder and CEO of Viaduct Technologies, a global Internet and mobile interactive agency. He was also instrumental in building digitalNATION, a world-leading Web hosting and services provider, from its launch through its $100m acquisition by Verio Internet/NTT (NYSE: NTT). Eric began his career with technical and software engineering positions at GEnie, a pre-Internet online service provider, and NeXT Computer.

Azeem Ansar is on the business development team at Flurry, the leading smartphone application analytics and monetization platform. He is responsible for driving revenue growth and establishing strategic partnerships with smartphone application developers, as well as a variety of third party mobile application enablers. Azeem joined Flurry through a merger with Pinch Media, where he led efforts in business development, marketing, and product support. Prior to his time with Flurry, Azeem was an investment banker at Houlihan Lokey in the Mergers & Acquisitions/Financial Advisory practice, where he covered engagements primarily in the technology, media, and telecommunications sector.  Azeem holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. 

Robert Z. Samuels joined NYTimes.com in October 2006. In his role as director of mobile products, he is responsible for the development of The New York Times’s mobile products, including iPad, iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Palm, Mobile Web, SMS, Times Reader, Kindle, and eReaders. Additionally, he is responsible for online and mobile games. Before joining The Times, Mr. Samuels worked at AOL LLC in Dulles, Virginia, managing mobile product, premium product, and corporate revenue system development as a principal product manager. Prior to AOL, Mr. Samuels was a management consultant at Grant Thornton LLP in its Federal practice based in Virginia.  Mr. Samuels received an M.B.A. in Technology Management from George Mason University.

Luke Janssen is the CEO and founder of TigerSpike, growing it from a 3 person company in 2003 in Sydney, Australia to the most innovative company in mobile with offices in Sydney, London and New York, where Luke moved in 2008 to help build the USA business. Before TigerSpike, Luke completed a degree in Computer Science from Kings College, London, and after qualifying as a chartered accountant with KPMG, moved to Australia, ultimately becoming manager in charge of the Information, Communication, and Entertainment service line for KPMG’s Information Risk Management department division before leaving to set up TigerSpike in 2003.
