INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES
The purpose of the internship program is to provide an opportunity for students in the
Certificate program to acquire experience in the field and apply the practical skills learned in
the program to a business situation as well as to develop additional competencies in specialized
areas, ones not covered in program courses or that are touched on briefly.
The number of times you need to meet with the coordinator will vary by the internship, so there
is no set number of meetings. Much can be accomplished by phone, fax and email. Students should
send copies of their final proposal, outline and final paper/project to the
Integrated Marketing Department
11 West 42nd Street, Room 431
New York, NY 10003
or via email to:
scps.marketing.pr@nyu.edu
Project formats will vary. The coordinator will grade the project but the Institute’s
administration will also review the final project and retain a copy for future reference. The
project should be completed by week 12 of the internship.
THE PROCESS
The student registers for the Internship course,
Internship in Marketing, Direct and Interactive Marketing, or Public Relations,
X50.9220. Obtains the internship listing from the blackboard course and arranges an
interview with the company sponsoring the internship. Once the student is offered the internship
and all approvals are granted, the Internship Coordinator or a Integrated Marketing Department
administrator will review the internship guidelines with the company sponsoring the internship.
The internship coordinator will follow-up with the employer to reinforce the guidelines and
compliances of the internship requirements. The employer agrees to complete the evaluation form,
which will be used as one grading element for the Internship. The Coordinator issues the official
grade for student.
The Center will require a letter from the company verifying the offer of the internship. This
letter contains the number of hours you work per week, the schedule, a description of the job and
tasks the student will be required to perform, the goal of the internship from the company’s
perspective as well as their expected outcomes, and the name and contact person of the person who
will be supervising the intern.
The student prepares an initial proposal statement including the objectives and intended goal
(research study, projects, etc.) for completing an internship. The internship may be a paid or a
non-paid internship; however, in order to use the internship experience toward the Certificate. The
Center will review the initial proposal and the Internship Coordinator will serve as the student’s
mentor. (A mentor is a faculty member and industry expert or a Center Administrator.)
INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES
The student must have completed the fundamental course or one other required course for
their specific specialization prior to applying for an internship and received a grade of B or
better in each course. Depending upon the experience of the student, this requirement may be waived
if the student can demonstrate significant work experience in one or more of the related fields.
Students may elect to obtain an internship through NYU’s listing or acquire an internship on
their own (upon approval of a Integrated Marketing Department administrator). The student has up to
one-year from the time of registration to complete the internship.
Student must complete a minimum of 80 internship work hours over the course of an 8-10 week
period. The student is allowed to continue the internship longer upon the invitation of the
sponsoring company. The grade is based upon the company’s evaluation of the student and how well he
or she met the objectives outlined in the proposal.
