Online Exams

All McGhee Online courses have midterm and final exams that are either held online or proctored on-site. Consult the course syllabus for exam types and procedures.

Online exams are taken through the NYU-SCPS Online Learning Platform. These are open-book examinations that are timed and on a set date. You do not need to be on-campus to take these exams.

Proctored exams are given on a scheduled date at a set time and are held on-campus or in a proctored setting off-site. You may choose to come to the NYU campus for the exam or make arrangements for an off-site proctored exam, according to the following procedures.

Finding a Proctor

Students are responsible for finding a qualified proctor to administer each exam and to arrange the exam date, time, and location. Proctor arrangements can be made through nearby colleges, universities, or college testing centers. The proctor must be an instructor, professor, or administrator affiliated with these institutions. The proctor is required to have the following:

  • A business e-mail address reflecting employment by an applicable institution
  • Reliable Internet access
  • Access to a fax machine or scanner
  • Ability to download and print PDF documents

A proctor cannot be a coworker, family member, or friend of the student. If the proctor charges a fee, the student is responsible for payment.

If you live in the tri-state area, you may choose to come to the NYU campus to take a proctored exam on campus. Contact the McGhee Division at mcghee.advising@nyu.edu or (212) 992-9055 to make arrangements.

Submitting the Proctored Exam Request

Once you have found a qualified proctor, you must complete and submit the Proctored Exam form for each exam (even if you use the same proctor) no later than two weeks before the exam date, as determined by the instructor. The form is available through the NYU-SCPS Online Learning Platform once you have registered for the course. Consult the course syllabus for midterm and final exam dates. If you do not submit a proctored exam form, or submit it late, you may forfeit the opportunity to take the exam.

When your request has been approved, you and your proctor will receive an e-mail that includes exam policies and procedures. If you do not receive an e-mail within two business days, you should contact the McGhee Division at mcghee.advising@nyu.edu or (212) 992-9055 for assistance.

Taking the Exam

Your instructor will share and explain exam policies and procedures during class. Your proctor will receive the exam and detailed exam instructions shortly before the date of the exam. The exam must be completed no later than the exam date, as determined by the instructor. Immediately after the exam's completion, the proctor must return the exam materials to the given e-mail address or fax number. If you miss the exam, you are subject to the course instructor's make-up policy. Non-adherence to the examination policies and procedures by either student or proctor may result in the exam's dismissal.
