On Tuesday, December 4th at New York University, Joel Fleishman—one of the nation's leading
authorities on America's foundations—delivered a talk about his recent book, The Foundation: A
Great American Secret, (Public Affairs, 2007, 357 pp.), at a free lunchtime conversation and book
signing hosted by the George H. Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising at NYU's School of
Continuing and Professional Studies.
A professor of law and public policy at Duke University, and former president of the Atlantic
Philanthropic Service Company, Fleishman spoke on a range of topics: how foundation investments
affect public priorities, why some foundations succeed and others fail, and whether foundations
should be more accountable to the public.
