Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising

CERTIFICATE IN GRANTMAKING AND FOUNDATIONS

The Certificate in Grantmaking and Foundations is designed for entry to mid-level grantmakers, both professional and volunteer. The curriculum provides a structured program built on the core competencies necessary for philanthropic giving by individuals and grantmaking organizations. This program is the only one of its kind in the United States and addresses a long unmet need--to train grantmakers to give wisely and with more sophistication.

Upon completion of the program, students have:

  • Knowledge of the history of philanthropy in America and elsewhere in the world.
  • Familiarity with the law, financial structures, and nature of nonprofits and NGOs.
  • Familiarity with best practices, values, and ethics of grantmaking and philanthropy.
  • Knowledge, skills, and strategies in grantmaking, as well as current trends.
  • Familiarity with how to evaluate grants and the role of the grantmaker.

This certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete seven courses--five required and two electives (or the equivalent). A B-plus or higher average is required for certificate eligibility. Advisement is available to help you make the optimal choice of courses for your career goals.

* Any of the Strategic Grantmaking I courses may fulfill the required course requirement, but students have the option to take a second one as an elective.** PHIL1-CE9160, PHIL1-CE9405 and PHIL1-CE9406 count as one half of an elective.*** The course PHIL1-CE9029 fulfills the equivalent of Foundations of Philanthropy and Grantmaking/PHIL1-CE9010 and Strategic Grantmaking I/PHIL1-CE9025 requirements.
