M.S. in Public Relations
and Corporate Communication

JOHN DOORLEY: BIOGRAPHY

While John Doorley was head of corporate communications at Merck, from 1987 until 2000, the company was on just about everyone’s “Most Admired” list, usually at the top. Before joining Merck, he was the chief speechwriter for the CEO of Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. In 2000, he began teaching as an adjunct instructor at Rutgers University and New York University, and he developed and taught a course on reputation management.

He was named to the full-time faculty at Rutgers in 2001, and then moved to New York University in 2005 where he became clinical assistant professor and academic director of the new M.S. in Public Relations and Corporate Communication degree program. His work in reputation management has been covered in PR Week and O’Dwyer’s Public Relations News, and PRNews called him a “luminary on reputation management.”

Doorley holds a B.S. in biology from St. Vincent College, an M.A. in journalism from New York University, and he completed the Harvard University-Merck Executive Business Program. He has won numerous writing awards, been recognized by the New Jersey Governor’s Office for his pro bono work with pediatric cancer patients, and recently received the Award for Outstanding Service from NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

He is coauthor with NYU colleague Helio Fred Garcia of Reputation Management: The Key to Successful Public Relations and Corporate Communications, which was published in 2007 by the venerable academic publisher Routledge. The book is being used in colleges in the U.S. and as far away as South Africa, and as a professional development tool in numerous corporations and government agencies.
