At NYU, you learn how to anticipate and brainstorm innovative solutions to complex, contemporary problems with the best in the publishing industry. Our faculty members are among the finest in academia—senior executives at major book and magazine companies, responsible for important daily operations of their divisions. Your professors share an insider’s view and challenge your critical thinking and decision-making abilities. Their experience spans the breadth of publishing— editorial, product development, circulation, marketing, acquisitions, branding, digital strategies, accounting, finance, corporate planning, advertising, and legal—with companies such as Simon & Schuster, John Wiley & Sons, Condé Nast, BusinessWeek , Random House, The Meredith Corporation, Scholastic Inc., HarperCollins, Newsweek , and Time Inc.
To give students real-world publishing experience, faculty often use industry-specific projects such as business and marketing plans and editorial revisions and redesigns. Faculty stress teamwork and team building and use practical industry examples and case studies to demonstrate marketplace applications. Students are challenged to address timely issues such as generating book sales in a turbulent economy, successfully launching a new media product, creating an innovative print and online marketing or advertising campaign, expanding into international markets and reaching a wider online audience through social networking strategies. Faculty serve as important guides and mentors. In addition, they invite prominent colleagues from the industry to be guest speakers, widening students’ opportunity to network and benefit from multiple publishing viewpoints.
