M.S. in Publishing

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Prospective Student,

In an era of digital publishing, the pathway to success in the book and magazine industries is constantly changing. Today, members of the publishing community must learn new ways of doing business in a challenging, evolving industry. NYU’s Master of Science in Publishing prepares you to achieve your goals in this new environment.

In addition to providing the building blocks of the publishing industry, including marketing, promotion, editing, finance, information technology, management, and law, we teach the digital skills necessary for success in this rapidly changing industry. We draw on the extraordinary talent and resources of New York City, the greatest publishing and media center in the world. Our professors are all leading figures in the industry.

In addition to teaching students the traditional ways to publish a book or magazine, our professors share the Web-savvy tactics of the modern manager in a multi-faceted media company with complex outlets and goals. Faculty members approach their courses as career preparation sessions. Class assignments are all real-world workplace tasks in which students address problems they will encounter on the job. In addition, we offer an ongoing series of speakers and workshops to give students an inside look at the industry and provide networking opportunities. Internships also provide increased exposure to the industry.

My goal is to prepare today’s professional for success and career satisfaction. The process of creating a book or magazine is not only a job, but a privilege. Our students must master an industry in transition and learn to use the power of the printed word and the Web to inspire bold ideas and profound change.

Sincerely,

Andrea L. Chambers, B.S., M.S.
