Hearst Magazines President David Carey and New York Times Media Columnist David Carr debate the changing face of magazine brands, the real impact of the e-reader, revenue models that work, and much more in the latest event in the NYU Media Talk series, “Magazines 2011: The New Conversation.” Hosted by The Center for Publishing at the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the NYU Media Talk series presents public conversations with media leaders about trends in business from an industry insider’s viewpoint.
In 2010, David Carey was named president of Hearst Magazines. He oversees the company’s nearly 200 editions around the world, including 14 U.S. titles. Prior to joining Hearst, Carey was group president at Condé Nast, where he oversaw the company’s media properties targeted to business and executive audiences, including Wired and Golf Digest. His wide-ranging career includes leading the print/digital start-up of Portfolio and Portfolio.com and serving as vice president and publisher of The New Yorker, re-launch publisher of House & Garden, and founding publisher of SmartMoney. Among other honors, Carey was named industry “Executive of the Year” by Adweek and received the Hall of Achievement award from the American Advertising Federation. In 2010, Media Industry Newsletter inducted Carey into its industry Hall of Fame. He is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles.
As a writer and reporter for The New York Times, David Carr covers media and technology in the “Media Equation” column, which appears on Mondays in the business section. He also contributes to the Media Decoder blog for the newspaper and writes for the culture section. For four years, he blogged and made videos as “the Carpetbagger” for the Times during Oscar season. Previously, Carr was editor of the Washington City Paper and the Twin Cities Reader, a contributing writer for The Atlantic and New York magazines, as well as the media writer for Inside.com. Carr’s bestseller, The Night of the Gun, was published in 2008. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota.
