The publishing industry and its need to adapt in these challenging times was the topic of discussion in the latest of NYU’s Media Talk event series, “Staying Current, Clickable and Profitable.” The New York Times media columnist David Carr and The Daily Beast founder and editor-in-chief Tina Brown discuss the state of the publishing industry as well as talk about Brown’s path to online media.

Hosted by the Center for Publishing at NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies, NYU’s Media Talk presents public conversations with media leaders about trends in business, from an industry insider’s viewpoint.

David Carr, media columnist, The New York Times - David Carr writes a column for the Monday Business section of The New York Times, focusing on media issues including print, digital, film, radio, and television. He also works as a general assignment reporter for the Culture section of The Times, covering all aspects of popular culture. During the Oscar season, Carr writes a daily blog called The Carpetbagger. For the past 25 years, he has been writing about media as it intersects with business, culture, and government. Prior to joining The Times in 2002, Carr was a contributing writer for The Atlantic Monthly and New York Magazine and the media writer for Inside.com. Before coming to New York City, he served for five years as editor of the Washington City Paper, an alternative weekly in Washington, D.C. From 1993 to 1995, he was editor of the Twin Cities Reader, a Minneapolis-based alternative weekly. Carr’s bestselling book, The Night of the Gun, a reported memoir of addiction and recovery, was published by Simon & Schuster.

Tina Brown, founder and editor-in-chief, The Daily Beast - Tina Brown has had an illustrious and groundbreaking career in journalism. Brown became the editor-in-chief of Tatler magazine at the age of 25 and rose to prominence in the American media industry as the editor of the magazines Vanity Fair from 1984 to 1992 and of The New Yorker from 1992 to 1998. In 1998, she left The New Yorker and co-founded Talk Media, launching Talk magazine and the Talk Miramax Books company. From April 2003 to May 2005 Tina was the host of CNBC’s Topic A with Tina Brown, a weekly series which featured opinionated guests discussing and debating provocative topics in the arenas of business, politics and culture. She also wrote a weekly column for The Washington Post Style section. In June 2007 came her first book the New York Times bestseller about the life and times of Princess Diana, The Diana Chronicles published by Doubleday. Throughout her career, Brown has been honored with four George Polk Awards, five Overseas Press Club awards, ten National Magazine Awards, and the C.B.E. (Commander of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth, for her services to overseas journalism. She is currently the founder and editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast, a culture and news media website, and is writing a non-fiction work on Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton.
