Architecture, Engineering, and Construction

MICHAEL ROSS

Adjunct lecturer, Architecture, Engineering and Construction

"In class, we talk about real situations that students have experienced. We’re then able to apply what we’ve discussed in the classroom directly to the workplace."

At NYU-SCPS students are exposed to an enormous wealth of real world experience from facultydiversified, experienced instructors, with actual, on-the-job experiences that makes the program unique and innovative. NYU’s location is another advantage, not only because the classrooms are easily accessible for working students but also because this is where major construction takes place. Many of the larger firms are headquartered here. This increases the caliber of lecturers, which creates more networking opportunities for the students.

The student diversity itself adds depth to the curriculum as we learn from their experience. In class we talk about real situations that the students have experienced and I like to discuss real situations I’ve had and how they’ve been resolved. NYU students have a real thirst for knowledge and a desire to advance themselves. I really like it when a student tells me that a particular lecture was relevant to his or her work. Many students have sent me resumes, which I’ve passed on to HR and we have employed them. Others network among themselves. Ten years ago, a student wanted to build-out a restaurant and ultimately hired one of the other students, who had small construction company.

"I really enjoyed the overall teaching style, which incorporated real-life experience. As far as I’m concerned, real life is how you learn."
