John Eschemuller
associate clinical professor, Graduate Construction Management Program at the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate
"This is not part of a technical or engineering school—it is the M.B.A. of New York City’s construction management industry."
NYU is all about real world experience. I’ve spent 40 years in the industry, starting as a licensed professional engineer in New York State. I was with Verizon for 20 years, building their corporate headquarters, and was with Structuretone as a senior vice president for major projects for another 18 years. I was also an adjunct professor in the M.B.A. program at Pace for two decades.
One of the top benefits I see at NYU is real-life experience—NYU’s faculty actually works in the construction industry, which allows the students to interface with its members. That’s an invaluable opportunity. Students see large construction projects firsthand in the metropolitan area, and they’re exposed to New York City’s best industry professionals. They attend industry events and they get to build a network with industry professionals. They also receive immeasurable support from NYU career information forums, career nights, breakfast forums, and construction industry courses. And that’s what makes this graduate program so unique—its creation came about at the request of the New York City construction industry. NYU students benefit greatly from the fact that this is not part of a technical or engineering school—it is the M.B.A. of New York City’s construction management industry.
