The M.S. in Real Estate Development program explores the role of development as it impacts society today--a constantly changing built environment that requires innovative solutions to evolving issues. More than a just a focus on the techniques of development, our program embraces the important role that developers have in delivering what people need, and we teach the discipline from a holistic approach, preparing students with the knowledge and skills to produce real estate projects strategically and effectively from beginning to end--including planning and design, budgets and finance, business negotiations (leasing, construction, contract, and land use), and environmental regulations.
The program places a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship and on preparing leaders with strong problem-solving skills who think creatively and strategically and who respect the social, economic, and environmental impacts of development. Our students learn how to find value and create opportunity--and turn that opportunity into a workable business model--and create a corporation or business unit around it. Through their chosen concentration, students then focus in a specific discipline (sustainable practices in construction and development, advanced finance, public-private partnerships, or global development), which directly respond to the changing needs of the industry.
The Center for the Sustainable Built Environment (SBE)--the newly established research and education center created at NYU Schack--fosters evidence-based industry practices in sustainable real estate development and investment and provides unique, forward-thinking research opportunities for master’s students to examine the development of energy efficient, environmentally friendly buildings and infrastructure, and to analyze the supporting technologies and regulations needed for that development to happen. The master’s program is further enriched by a faculty of leading industry practitioners who bring their extensive real-world experience; strong ties to the regional, national, and international real estate communities; and practical expertise to the classroom to promote learning through hands-on business application.
The M.S. in Real Estate Development is a 42-credit program that may be completed on either a full-time or part-time basis. Daytime and evening courses are offered, and classes are held at the NYU Midtown Center at 11 West 42nd Street.
