The NYU REIT Center

The REIT Center was established in 1998 as a forum for the study and analysis of publicly-traded REITs and other real estate operating companies and the related corporatization, securitization and consolidation trends that are transforming the real estate industry, in the United States and globally.

The Center’s goals are to serve as a sponsor for research, discussion, and analysis; an educational center for conferences and symposia for professionals and students; and a forum for leading thinkers from all sectors and professions in the industry to gather in order to exchange and develop ideas. Among other activities, the Center sponsors an influential annual conference on REITs and a White Paper series.

New York University’s nexus to Wall Street creates a natural and exciting focus for the Center. The Center seeks to complement and work with, rather than compete with, existing industry groups and trade associations with similar interests. The mission of the Center is to fulfill a need for in-depth study and analysis in an objective academic setting and thereby to enhance the work of other groups.

The Center’s current interests include:

  • REIT and real estate consolidation and related M&A activity
  • REIT and UPREIT governance
  • the evolution of the REIT and UPREIT structures
  • succession planning for mature REITs
  • capital raising techniques
  • competition between the public and private capital markets
  • property-for-stock (or UPREIT unit) swaps
  • tax and regulatory constraints and opportunities
  • globalization.
