The M.S. in Tourism Management curriculum consists of an initial one-week intensive orientation, a core of courses that provide you with a range of subjects necessary for all industry professionals, optional electives, and the Capstone, in which you apply your new skills and knowledge. This program is offered on a full- or part-time basis.
INTENSIVE ORIENTATION
Before the start of formal classes, Tisch Center students participate in a one-week intensive industry orientation to learn about NYU’s policies and procedures; meet faculty members and alumni who offer perspectives on tourism and hospitality; explore concepts of critical thinking through workshops; and participate in an overview of basic economic, accounting, and finance principles and concepts to set the foundation upon which in-depth economic, accounting, and finance theory rests.

CORE CURRICULUM
The general core, comprised of nine courses, explores the industry from every angle--from the role of the tourism industry in the larger society, including how tourism policy impacts governments, to emerging technological and economic trends in international tourism. You delve into sustainable tourism, examining the part natural and cultural resources play in a country's ability to market itself as a tourist destination, and financial strategies for tourism development. You also explore tourism product development and cultural heritage tourism.

ELECTIVES
Students may take elective courses, with the approval of their academic advisors. Creating an independent study provides the opportunity to work with a faculty member on a well-defined, specific topic. Approved topics should be extensions of existing courses previously taken or areas in which no courses are offered. Independent research allows you to explore in-depth areas of your particular interest. This course requires the prior approval of an appropriate academic advisor as to the topic.
Students who do not have relevant industry experience, or who want to expand their professional experience into another aspect of the industry, may choose to take an internship as an elective. Students who elect to take an internship graduate with 36 credits instead of 33.
Students may also take other graduate courses offered by the Tisch Center or by other graduate programs within NYU-SCPS as elective courses, with the approval of an academic advisor.

CAPSTONE
In your final semester, once you've completed 24 credits of the Core curriculum, you take two courses designed to reinforce the knowledge you have acquired throughout the graduate program. In the Advanced Research Seminar, you work in a team with other students on a topic, selected by faculty, that has been deemed a significant issue or challenge for the future of the tourism industry. In the Consulting Strategies course, you learn how to solve real dilemmas for existing organizations in need of advice.
