This 30-minute presentation by Clinical Assistant Professor Wayne G. McDonnell, Jr. is about the New York Yankees’ impact on the competitive balance tax, revenue sharing, player procurement in an auction market, attendance, stadium construction, and innovative business ventures.
Professor McDonnell, a former financial analyst and accountant with such entities as Madison Square Garden and the Marsh & McLennan Companies, is currently a member of the full-time faculty of the NYU Tisch Center’s B.S. in Sports Management, M.S. in Sports Business, and continuing education programs. Professor McDonnell’s research area is the financial aspects of major and minor league baseball, where he has written on topics such as revenue sharing, luxury tax, and salary arbitration and compensation.

This summer, Professor McDonnell will be teaching “The Business of Baseball,” a new, one-week intensive course designed for those who have a genuine interest in analyzing business strategies and practices that impact our national pastime. Offered June 22–26, 2009 in midtown Manhattan, the curriculum covers critical topics in the business of baseball “off the field” – financing and business models, unionization and collective bargaining, player valuations and procurement, the impact of the recession on luxury suites and season tickets, and much more.
