Summer Publishing Institute (SPI)

The Summer Publishing Institute (SPI) immerses students in an intense, six-week study of books and digital/magazine media. The 2018 NYU Summer Publishing Institute promises to be a particularly exciting year as we celebrate our 40th anniversary helping aspiring publishers achieve their dreams. The program combines workshops, strategy sessions, and presentations by some of the leading figures in publishing. Our faculty members and speakers introduce students to the editorial, marketing, creative, business, sales, and digital aspects of the industry. The program also places a large emphasis on using content creation and business strategies in a wide range of media brands and platforms.

This intensive program is taught by faculty members who are top professionals in the industry, including CEOs, publishers, editors, digital strategists, literary agents, video producers, designers, marketers, and publicists. Classroom learning includes lectures, workshops, and hands-on strategy sessions in subjects like cover design, video shooting and editing, app development, manuscript editing, social media marketing, creating effective websites, and content creation. In addition, learning outside the classroom takes place during visits to major book publishing houses, magazine media companies, and digital content companies across New York City.

The Summer Publishing Institute is designed for recent college graduates and for young professionals who are interested in careers in book and magazine publishing.

** NEW THIS YEAR: SPI Open to Rising College Seniors **
For the first time, SPI will make the program available to qualified undergraduate students who will have completed their junior year before entering the program. We understand that many undergraduates want to jump-start their publishing education early and then begin a career in the field once they graduate. For more information on requirements and how to apply, please see page 18 of our online brochure. NOTE: This option is ONLY for those undergraduates entering their senior year in Fall 2018.
