Arts Programs
From the 15th to the 17th century, a succession of astonishing artists made the Netherlands a renowned artistic center, as works by Netherlandish masters were sought by princes and merchants throughout Europe. Van Eyck, Brueghel, Rembrandt, and Vermeer, among many others, continue to speak to us today through their landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and genre paintings. This course focuses on masterpieces by these artists, works of intense naturalism and detail that stretched the technical and artistic boundaries of their day, yet were highly expressive of the experience of everyday life. Artists discussed also include Bosch, Durer, and Roger van der Weyden.
