This survey of art, which begins in the early decades of our nation's history, celebrates the opening of the newly renovated American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. View and discuss paintings, sculpture, architecture, and design objects from the museum's superlative collection in class sessions supplemented by slide lectures. Emphasis is on the forging of an American identity. Works studied include portraits by Copley and Stuart; mid-century genre paintings by Mount and Bingham; the Hudson River School landscapes of Cole and Durand; and architectural examples from the early decades of American history.
