Continuing Education: Foreign Languages, Translation, and Interpreting

This course is for students who have never studied the language before. In 12 sessions they are introduced to the basic pronunciation and tones through vocabulary, useful expressions, and structures that allow communication. They learn the pinyin transliteration system as well as some basic radicals. The course emphasizes all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing.) The course is conducted in the target language as much as possible. Both traditional and simplified characters are taught. At the end of the course students have mastered 120 characters. The textbook employed in this program is Integrated Chinese Level I Part I--Traditional Characters (3rd Edition, Cheng and Tsui, 2009).
