The purpose of this course is to introduce students to sustainable development and green building methods in the context of real estate investment, development, and construction management, covering the entire sustainable development process from project evaluation and site planning through the design, construction, commissioning, and occupancy phases. Topics include: economic growth and equality, environmental justice, smart growth and planning, renewable energy sources and techniques, green building and zoning codes, economic and financial considerations, financing sources and incentive programs, and green building design and construction methods and materials. Specific attention will be given to the US Green Building Council LEED rating systems and the integration and optimization of site and building design, energy and water efficiency, resource-efficient construction, lighting and mechanical design, and building ecology.
