Although better known as a playwright in the West, Anton Chekhov was a master of the short story. Reflecting on the human condition in prerevolutionary Russia, he wrote with clarity and conviction about all classes--aristocrats, peasants, and merchants. Chekhov was a transitional writer; while rooted in the traditions of realism, he introduced themes generally associated with modernism, such as quiet despair, alienation, and the ultimate inability to communicate. Focus on Chekhov's short stories, including the creation of mood and the ironic twist, two of the major features of his writing.
