Communications Ethics, Law, and Regulation

PRCC1-GC1010
Credit: Marketing, Advertising, and Public Relations

From considerations of objectivity-versus-advocacy, to quandaries created by cross-cultural ethical considerations, today?s communicator is faced with ages-old dilemmas made more complex by established and emerging laws and regulations aimed at greater governance and organizational transparency. Just because something is legal does not make it ethical or socially acceptable, as some recent scandals in business and not-for-profits have demonstrated in the sharpest relief. But out of these scandals have come laws and regulations (from Sarbanes/Oxley to securities regulations and guidelines governing disclosure of information about publicly traded companies) that have put organizations and the people who speak for them at greater peril. There are ways to be better prepared, including knowledge of professional codes, such as those of the Public Relations Society of America and the International Association of Business Communicators.
